Fonds consists of personal letters from William Lyon Mackenzie King to Lord Athlone concerning King's relationship to the Governor General, Athlone's participation in Canadian affairs and visits to Ottawa by heads of state, photocopy, 1940-1946, 2 cm (vol. 1); addresses welcoming Athlone to various cities and provinces of Canada, and addresses bidding him farewell, most of which are in calligraphic script, some are illustrated, original, n.d., 1940-1945, 15 cm (vols. 2-4).

The fonds also contains photographs, [ca. 1895-1945], depicting the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York to Vancouver, B.C., September-October 1901, Vancouver City Archives photos; aluminum smelters, hydro-electric power developments, and port facilities of the Aluminum Company of Canada Ltd., Arvida, Shawinigan Falls, La Tuque, Shipshaw, Chute à Caron, Isle Maligne, Lake Manouan, Passe Dangereuse, Port Alfred, Que., 1938-1942; training activity, personnel, and aircraft of the R.C.A.F. participating in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan at the following bases: No. 1 Wireless School, Montreal, Que., No. 4 Elementary Flying Training School, Windsor Mills, Que., No. 1 Central Flying School, Trenton, Ont., No. 1 Technical Training School, St. Thomas, Ont., 1940-1941; customs and portraits of the Quatsino and Koskemo Indian tribes of British Columbia, ca. 1895-1925, photos by B.W. Leeson, album presented to the Earl of Athlone during his visit to Vancouver, B.C., 14 April 1941; forestry operations at the Dominion Forest Nursery Station.

Athlone, Alexander Augustus Frederick William Alfred George Cambridge, comte d', 1874-1957 : Alexander Augustus Cambridge, Earl of Athlone was born in 1874 at Kensington Place, London, England. Following military service in India and South Africa, Athlone was nominated Governor General of Canada in 1914, but did not take up the appointment owing to the outbreak of World War I. After the War, Athlone retired from the army and took an active interest in British philanthropic and educational matters. From 1923 to 1931, he was Governor General and High Commissioner for the Union of South Africa. After serving as governor and constable of Windsor Castle, Athlone was named Governor General of Canada in 1940, a position which he retained until 1946. He then returned to Great Britain and resumed his participation in national affairs.
