Fonds consists of an Ottawa Choral Society souvenir photograph by Samuel J. Jarvis, of a concert with J. Edgar Birch as conductor, April 18, 1898; photograph of an unidentified group of men with J. Edgar Birch.

Birch, J. Edgar (John Edgar), 1854-1931 : J. Edgar Birch, musician, organist, choirmaster and composer, was born in England and immigrated to Canada. In his time, he was organist at Trinity College School, Port Hope, Ont. and organist and choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal, Que. and All Saints', St. George's and St. Andrew's Churches, Ottawa, Ont. He was appointed principal of the Canadian College of Music, Ottawa, 1895, and founded the Ottawa Choral Society, 1897. He was also a composer, one of his compositions being the setting to music of verse by Duncan Campbell Scott. See: Morgan, Canadian Men and Women of the Time, 1912, p. 102.
