He served in the Northwest Rebellion, and World War I as Lieutenant-Colonel of the 108, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was first elected to the House of Commons as conservative representative for Selkirk, Man. in 1908 and held that position until he was appointed Senator in 1917, a position he held until 1925.
