The fonds consists of typescript copies of the marriage, baptism and burial registers kept by Rev. John Langhorn, Anglican missionary of Bath, 1787-1816, and kept by Rev. Robert McDowall, Presbyterian Minister of the Bay of Quinte area, west of Kingston, 1800-1841. The registers cover numerous lakeside settlements in the area of contemporary Lennox and Addington County, Prince Edward County, and Hastings County; that they pertain to a period in which it was common for Anglican and Presbyterian clergymen to perform marriages for persons of denominations other than their own. McDowall's baptismal records include birthdates as early as 1768.

Mecklenburg District (Ont.) : The Mecklenburg District was one of four judicial districts, created by Lord Dorchester's proclamation of 24 July 1788, in the so-called "western settlements" of the old province of Quebec. Its boundaries ran northward from Lake Ontario and extended from the mouth of the Gananoque River on the east to the mouth of the Trent River on the west. It was renamed, 15 October 1792, the Midland District of Upper Canada, with Kingston as its district town. In 1798, an act which redivided the province distributed the townships of the former Midland District between the counties of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, Hastings, and Prince Edward. The area was initially settled mainly by United Empire Loyalists. Among the pioneer missionaries who ministered to the early settlers in the district were Rev. John Langhorn (Church of England) and Rev. Robert McDowall (Dutch Reformed Church/Presbyterian).

Langhorn, John, Rev. (ca. 1744-1817) : The Reverend John Langhorn[e] (ca. 1744-1817) was a Church of England clergyman who occupied the Cataraqui district station of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) from 1787 until 1813, when he resigned because of ill health.

McDowall, Robert, Rev. (1768-1841) : Reverend Robert McDowall (ca. 1768-1841) was sent to Upper Canada in 1798 by the Dutch Reformed Church of the United States of America, Classis of Albany. In 1800 he accepted a call from the congregations of Adolphustown, Ernestown, and Fredericksburgh, and remained in that charge until his death in 1841. After 1819, it was a congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in Canada.

The extracts were transcribed by Loral and Mildred Wanamaker of Belleville, Ont., from the original mission registers held by the Synod Office of the Anglican Church of Canada (register of Rev. John Langhorn) and by Queen's University Archives, Kingston, Ont. (register of Rev. Robert McDowall). The extracts include comments by the compilers on the peculiarities of the records. They were received from Loral and Mildred Wanamaker in 1976 and microfilmed in 1987.
