Fonds consists of the papers of Arthur Clive Bell relating to his Canadian service as an Aide-de-Camp to Major-General Sir Edward Hutton, General Officer Commanding the Canadian Militia, and subsequently to Lord Minto, Governor General of Canada.

Morrison-Bell, Arthur Clive, 1871-1956 : Major Sir Arthur Clive Morrison-Bell, 1st Baronet of Harpford (1871-1956) was educated at Eton and Sandhurst. Born Arthur Clive Bell, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant with the Scots Guards in 1890, and promoted to Lieutenant in 1894. During 1898-1899, he served as Aide-de-Camp to Major-General Sir Edward Hutton, General Officer Commanding the Canadian Militia. Promoted to Captain in October 1899, he went to South Africa with the 1st Canadian Contingent in charge of the Maxim Gun Section, and was present at the actions of Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, and Driefontein. From 1900-1904, Captain Bell was ADC to Lord Minto, Governor General of Canada.

In 1905, the Bell family assumed the additional surname of Morrison. He was promoted to Major in 1906, and retired in 1908. Major Morrison-Bell rejoined his regiment at the outbreak of the First World War, and served in France in 1914-1915. From 1910, until his retirement in 1931, he sat as a Conservative for the Honiton Division, Devonshire, in the British House of Commons. During this time, he served as Private Secretary to the 1st Lord of the Admiralty, 1919-1921, and to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1924-1927. In 1923, he was created 1st Baronet of Harpford.

General note:

The Government House notes were presented by the Governor General's Secretary in 1959. The Distance Book and the Diary of the Royal Visit were acquired in 1991 from Lady Shelagh Campbell, daughter of Sir Arthur Clive Morrison-Bell, through the London Office of the National Archives of Canada.
