Fonds consists of textual records including scripts, memoranda, manuscripts, correspondence, and various miscellaneous records contained in two scrapbooks. Material has been divided into three series entitled: Speaking of Words column; Subject files; and Scrapbooks.

Fonds also includes moving images and sound recordings consisting of interviews by Norman DePoe as a CBC journalist including out-takes and excerpts from CBC programs; and interviews of politicians and other journalists on the career of Norman DePoe. Interviewees include: Norman DePoe, Lester B. Pearson, Tommy Douglas, John Diefenbaker, Morley Safer, Val Sears, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, D. Hatfield, Michael Maclear, Gerda Munsinger, and Pierre Sevigny.

In addition, fonds includes photographs depicting: Peter Stursberg, Norman DePoe, Charles Dole, and Vincent Tovell covering American elections, 2 November 1954; a portrait of DePoe; DePoe and an unidentified group at Miami, Florida, 1962; and Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, ca. 1949.

DePoe, Norman, 1917-1980 : Norman Reade DePoe, broadcaster and journalist, was born in 1917 at Portland, Ore., then moved to Vancouver as a child with his family in 1923. He attended the University of British Columbia, 1934-1938, and the University of Toronto, 1946-1949, studying Chemistry, History, English and Modern Languages. In 1938 he joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals serving during World War II in the United Kingdom, Italy and Northwest Europe, attaining the rank of Captain by 1945.

In 1948 he joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) News. He worked on both radio and television. He served his first broadcast assignment covering the U.S. political conventions in Chicago in 1952. From 1959 to 1966 he was Parliamentary Correspondent for CBC Television. He retired from the CBC in 1977. De Poe became one of Canada's best known broadcasters for his coverage of federal political affairs.

He published numerous free-lance articles for newspapers and magazines including the Christian Science Monitor, the New York Herald Tribune, the Ottawa Citizen and Saturday Night.
