3 prints.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of seven series of textual records, 1832-1991, predominant 1934-1980, as follows: correspondence; financial records; subject files; manuscripts of plays, short stories, books, and other writings; printed and miscellaneous material; copies of reference photographs; and posthumous material. While most of the material was created between 1934 and 1991, there are copies of earlier documents used in Schull's research, dating back to 1832. The fonds also contains additional textual records, ca. 1942-1991, in the form of correspondence, manuscripts and printed material relating to Joseph Schull, as well as some posthumous material.
Fonds also contains numerous sound recordings including interviews by Joseph Schull of family and colleagues of Donald Gordon in preparation for a biography of Gordon, 1975-1978; an oral history interview with Bud Schull by Helen Schull with assistance from her daughter Christiane 1985; and an assortment of Joseph Schull's plays for radio, 1953-1965.
Fonds also contains 14 maps, 1900-1974, consisting of National Geographic Society maps of Canada and the United States, maps by various agencies of Ontario roads and major Canadian cities, and reproductions of Eighteenth Century maps of Quebec City.
Fonds also consists of drawings, collages, and offset lithograph reproductions.
Fonds also contains photographs. One photograph depicts Sir Wilfred and Lady Laurier at a Colonial Conference in London, England in 1907; two portraits of Joseph Schull, one taken in England during the Second World War and one taken in Rosemere during the Nineteen Fifties; a photograph of a ship and another photograph of Schull.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Schull, Joseph, 1906-1980 : Joseph Schull, author and playwright, was born in 1906 in South Dakota in the United States and moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, with his family in 1913. He received his education at the University of Saskatchewn and Queen's University in Ontario. During the 1930s, Schull worked in the advertising field, as well as writing articles and poetry. In 1941, he became an Intelligence and Information Officer with the Royal Canadian Navy. After the Second World War he became a free-lance writer.
During his career, Schull wrote numerous plays for radio, television and stage. Many of these plays were produced in the United States and England as well as in Canada. He was also the author of a number of books on Canadian history, including "The Far Distant Ships" (1950), "100 Years of Banking in Canada" (1958), "Laurier" (1965), "Rebellion" (1971), "Edward Blake: The Man of the Other Way" (1975), "Edward Blake: Leader and Exile" (1976), and "The Great Scot: a biography of Donald Gordon" (1979). He also wrote for children and published two long poems, "The Legend of Ghost Lagoon" (1938) and "I, Jones, Soldier" (1945).
Joseph Schull married the journalist Hélène Gougeon in 1955 and they lived in Rosemere, Québec.
