Fonds consists of a 67 page unpublished typescript, providing a history of the beginnings of the government wireless service on the B.C. coast. It deals with the difficult beginning of the service, the personalities involved, and comments at length on maritime disasters and other significant events. Also included are two pages of extracts of newspaper clippings. It also contains two photographs (the one of Basil Irvine and W.J. Bowerman, and the other of students transmitting coded messages in the Radiocommunications Dept. of the High School of Commerce in Vancouver, ca. 1929).

Bowerman, Jack, 1887-1981 : Jack Bowerman, radio communications specialist, was born on 30 March 1887, in Bassingstoke, England. He commenced service with the Federal Government Wireless Service on the British Columbia coast on 1 May 1911. Through his efforts, a Radiocommunications Department was created, ca. 1929, in the Vancouver High School of Commerce, to produce trained wireless operators.

He retired from government service, by then the Federal Department of Transport, in 1952; he died in 1981.
