Two albums deal with the fabrication and erection of the Quebec Bridge and the Frozen Dog Camp on that project. The third album documents the floating into position and installation of lock gates in the Welland Ship Canal, 1926-1927, while the loose photographs deal with the Quebec Bridge and the Welland Ship Canal.
The fonds also contains an 11 page, handwritten, illustrated manuscript entitled "Some notes re: Miter Gates on Welland Canal Wall Quoin, Bedded Parts, and Procedures of Positioning Wall Bearing Plates". Written and signed by J.B. Stirling, and deals with technical details, construction, and their solution, 1926, 0.5 cm.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Stirling, James Buchanan, 1891-1974 : James Buchanan Stirling, civil engineer, was born in 1891 at Montreal. He studied at McGill University but left before graduation and finished his engineering education on the job. During his lifetime, he worked on a number of major Canadian engineering projects, including the Quebec Bridge as part of the St. Lawrence Bridge Company. On the Welland Ship Canal, he was Assistant General Manager and Chief Engineer for the Steel Gates Co. Ltd., which fabricated and installed miter gates in the locks. During the depression of the 1930s, when enginering work was scarce, Mr. Stirling was a salesman in Montreal and then plant manager for Electrolux in Coaticook, Quebec. During World War II he worked as an engineer for Harry F. McLean on the construction of a munitions plant in Valleyfield, Quebec.Additional information:General note:Received in 1981 from Mr. James B.
