Fonds consists of the manuscript of the biography, "And I Shall Fly", with correspondence, news clippings, programs and related ephemera accumulated by Z. Lewis Leigh, documenting the development of air transport in Canada from the late 1920s through the 1980s, 1919-1991.

Fonds also contains photographs depicting events, activities, geographical locations, types of aircraft, individuals and groups associated with the career of Z. Lewis Leigh, [ca. 1919]-1986; and copies of 11 photographs depicting his career, particularly the awarding to him of the Trans-Canada (McKee) Trophy in 1946.

Leigh, Z. Lewis (Zebulon Lewis), 1906- : Lewis Leigh was born in England and came to Canada with his family in 1909. He took his first flying lessons in 1929, and later that year accepted a job as manager and instructor of Southern Alberta Airlines, Medicine Hat Branch. After several years of flying as a bush-pilot in the North and on the east coast, he accepted a job with Canadian Airways in 1934, again flying in the North. In 1937 he joined Trans-Canada Airlines (T.C.A.) as chief pilot, and was present at T.C.A.'s inaugural mail and passenger flight.

Leigh resigned from T.C.A. and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.) in 1940 as Flight Lieutenant. He was promoted to Squadron Leader in 1941. In 1950 he was appointed Director of Air Operations for the R.C.A.F., stationed in Ottawa, served for a time in Korea, and in 1953 was made Officer Commanding, Air Transport Command. In 1954 he was posted to Toronto as Group Commander of #2 Group, and retired in 1957. Leigh received numerous awards for his flying, among these the McKee Trophy in 1947.
