Item is a diary maintained by Corporal F.W. Newberry, while a prisoner of war in Germany and Holland. The diary covers the years 1914-1918, but it was maintained sporadically; most entries are for 1914-1915 and 1918. It documents well the tedium of camp life, and the efforts by camp administrators and POWs to overcome this through various courses and activities.

Newberry, Frederick William, b. 1871 : Frederick William Newberry, soldier, was born in Leicester, England, in 1871, and saw service in the South African War with British territorial and imperial units. He later emigrated to Canada, and was employed as a carpenter. With the outbreak of the First World War, he enlisted at Valcartier, Quebec, in September 1914. As a corporal in the 7th Canadian Infantry Battalion, he was wounded and captured at Ypres in April 1915. Initially held in German prisoner of war camps at Hofgeismar, Gottingen and Langensalza, he was later interned in Holland from where he was repatriated.
