Fonds consists of two diaries detailing Fred Turnbull's career as an Able Seaman and then a Leading Seaman in the Royal Canadian Navy. The strength of these diaries is the detailed descriptions of the landings of troops in Sicily, Italy, Normandy, Southern France and Greece. Since Turnbull was posted to Landing Craft, Assault ships, he participated in the disembarkings at a level which allowed him to witness the entire event and the aftermath and afforded him the opportunity to record his considered observations. The vividly described disembarkings are D-Day, because of the ferocity of the German resistance, and Greece, because of the euphoria of the inhabitants following liberation. In his descriptions of the latter event Turnbull's diary entries are most polished.

Turnbull, Fred J., 1925- : Fred J. Turnbull, born in 1925 at Montreal, Que., served in the Royal Canadian Navy (R.C.N.), 1942-1945, as an Able Seaman and then a Leading Seaman. Posted to the 61st and the 529th Landing Craft Assault ships, he was part of the flotilla of H.M.C.S. Prince David. Highlights of his naval career included the landing at Sicily, Italy, Normandy, Southern France and Greece.
