Fonds consists of personal war diaries of Ernest Nelson of the 157th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, which cover Nelson's Military service from his initial training in Orillia, through his subsequent training in England at Camp Bramshot and Camp Borden, to combat service in France as of 1917. The diaries become more evocative as he experiences combat conditions and focuses on the deplorable living conditions and the mayhem created by the constant enemy shelling. When Nelson moved to a base behind the lines, his diaries change in character and dwell on the transfer of reinforcements to the front and the dispatching of wounded soldiers to hospitals. Also included is an extract from a 1917 letter from Nelson to Charles Saunders.

Nelson, Ernest, 1886-1975 : Ernest Nelson, born in 1886 at Orillia, Ont., enlisted in the 15th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Shortly after August 1917, he was transferred to the Forestry Corps in England. After the war, he returned to Orillia.
