Fonds consists of original documents, 1778-1874, and copies, ca. 1660-1866, relating to the history of Philipsburg, Quebec, and surrounding area and to the Ruiter Family. Also included are research correspondence and notes, 1920-1946, as well as manuscripts of a book, articles and speeches, 1938-1945, on the history of the Eastern Townships.

Montgomery, George A., 1874-1951 : George H.A. Montgomery, lawyer and historian, born in 1874, was educated at Bishop's and McGill universities. A lawyer by profession, he became Bátonnier of the Montreal Bar in 1927 and President of the Canadian Bar Association in 1935-1936. He was also on the board of directors of a number of corporations and Chancellor of Bishop's University until 1950.

Montgomery had a particular interest in the history of Philipsburg, Quebec, where he was born and where he maintained a summer home. His research, extending back to 1920, culminated in the publication in 1950 of Missisquoi Bay (Philipsburg, Quebec). In the course of his research, Montgomery collected a significant number of Ruiter family papers, which comprise about half of this collection and which should be consulted in conjunction with those in MG 23 G III 3.
