Fonds consists of Matthes' diary, in which she recorded her impressions of the journey by rail from Moscow to Antwerp, Belgium, the ocean voyage to Central America, and the family's attempt to adjust to conditions in Mexico (June 1924 - March 1925). Also included is a biographical note (n.d.), and photographic portraits of various Mennonite families in the Caucasus, Soviet Union (1910-1924).

Matthes, Tinchen, 1891-1927 : Born in Russia, Tinchen Matthes immigrated to Mexico in 1924, along with her family and a group of other Mennonites. Following an unsuccessful attempt at farming, the family moved to Canada and settled in Manitou, Manitoba, where they acquired a farm. Tinchen later took a position with the Ninette Sanitorium, but contracted tuberculosis and died in 1927.
