Fonds consists of biographical and personal information including correspondence and newsletters from his service in the Department of Manpower and Immigration and the Canadian Embassy Immigration Services in Rome. The multiculturalism subject series includes files pertaining to activities and associations interested in ethnic radio broadcasting, multiculturalism, the Canadian Citizenship Federation and the Maltese Canadian Community. The fonds also contains microfilmed published material collected by Bonavia during his career, n.d., 1948-1988, including scrapbooks of newspaper clippings about Maltese Canadians and newspaper columns written by Bonavia. This material is located on microfilm reel number M-3116.

The fonds also contains a 17 page booklet compiled by George Bonavia consisting of photocopied pages and process print cards of the Maltese coats-of-arms, [ca. 1976].

Bonavia, George, 1920-2007 : George Bonavia, ethnic affairs journalist and broadcaster, came to Canada from Malta in 1948 where he had worked as a journalist. He settled in Windsor, Ontario where he worked at the Ford assembly plant. There he became active in the local Maltese and other ethnic communities. He edited and published a monthly newspaper called "The Malta news Ahbarijiet ta' Malta" from 1954 to 1965. Also in Windsor he started the first Maltese radio program in Canada in 1955. The program later developed into a weekly half-hour spot on the CBC Radio Canada International network called "International Rendez-vous with George Bonavia". For almost forty years Mr. Bonavia has contributed to the Malta Radio Migrants' Magazine program. The program, in Maltese, is produced for the Government of Malta's Emigrants' Commission and is heard in Malta every week.

While still in Windsor, George Bonavia helped to establish the Windsor Citizenship Council. He later became president of the Canadian Citizenship Federation. After becoming a Canadian citizen in 1953, he joined the federal public service as a customs officer. A year later he transferred to the Department of Immigration and worked as an immigration officer on the Windsor-Detroit border. In 1965 he moved to Ottawa where he joined the newly formed Information Service of the Department of Employment and Immigration. That year he was posted to the Canadian Embassy in Rome, Italy as an immigration officer where he remained for three years.

In 1968 he returned to Ottawa where he worked with the ethnic media and ethnocultural groups. He developed and edited the department's magazine "Kaleidoscope Canada" for ten years from 1972 until his retirement from the department in 1982. Mr. Bonavia wrote several books on Canada in Maltese including "Canada - Land of Hope and Prosperity" (1951); "Workers in Canada" (1961); "In Canada Now - Thoughts and Events"; and "Canada - From an Unknown Country to a Great Nation". He also authored "Immigrants We Read About: Immigrants to Canada - Their Life Experiences and Contributions to Canada's Development" (1986) and the "Maltese Directory Canada" (1988).
