Fonds consists of the microfilmed papers of Alexander Johnston as deputy minister of Marine and Fisheries, 1910-1932, as member of the Nova Scotia Provincial Economic Enquiry, 1934, and as Deputy Director of Censorship during part of World War II. There are diaries, 1933-1939, 1 microfilm reel; correspondence, 1906-1945, 1 microfilm reel; material relating to the Department of Marine and Fisheries, 1915-1935, 1 microfilm reel; the Nova Scotia, Royal Commission, 1933, 1 microfilm reel; and censorship, 1942-1943, 1 microfilm reel. Johnston, Alexander, 1867-1951 : Alexander Johnston, journalist, politician, and public servant, was born in 1867 in Richmond County, N.S., and received his education from St. Francis Xavier University. He was the president of the Sydney Printing Company and managing editor of the Sydney, N.S. Daily Record. He represented Cape Breton as a member of the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly, 1897-1900, and as a member of Parliament, 1900-1908. He served as Federal deputy minister of marine and fisheries, 1910-1932, playing an important part in directing Canada's policy on wireless, radio broadcasting and civil aviation, all of which at that time came within the jurisdiction of his department. During World War II, he served for a time as deputy director of censorship.
