Sydney Lewis Penhorwood in England; return of C.E.F. troops to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, 1919; ships in the Sault Ste. Marie Canal, Ontario, ca. 1919; view of the Panama Canal, 1920-1925.

Fonds also contains textual material consisting of correspondence and biographical material; O.B.E. and Royal Victorian certificates and correspondence; newspaper clippings; scrapbooks containing material relating to the Canadian Forestry Corps and the Royal Family, photographs, programmes, memorabilia, correspondence, and clippings.

Biography/Administrative history:

Penhorwood, Sydney Lewis, 1872-1961 : Colonel Sydney Penhorwood, military officer and businessman, was born in Swansee, Wales, and immigrated to Canada between 1882 and 1884. After graduating from the Royal College of Artillery in 1894, he moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., where he worked as an engineer. In 1911, Penhorwood organized the 51st Regiment, Sault Rifles, and received the rank of lieutenant-colonel; he subsequently also organized the 37th Battalion. He was posted overseas with the 138th Battalion in 1915 and in 1917 was appointed Assistant-Director of Timber Operations for the Canadian Forestry Battalion (formerly the 51st Regiment) in Great Britain.

In 1919 he returned to Sault Ste. Marie, where he was active in community affairs for the remainder of his life. Col. Penhorwood received the Order of the British Empire in 1917 and the Royal Victorian Order in 1919.
