Fonds consists of transcripts of correspondence between Professor Mavor and Canadian and Russian authorities regarding Doukhobor immigration to Canada, 1898-1899; and correspondence between Mavor and Colonel J.B. Maclean regarding immigration, 1922. An index to the correspondence is bound with the papers.

Mavor, James, 1854-1925 : James Mavor was born in Scotland and educated at the University of Glasgow. He was appointed a professor of Political Economy at the University of Toronto in 1892 and chaired the Department of Political Economy from 1895 until his retirement in 1923. An inveterate traveller during his vacations, he visited Russia and formed a close friendship with Tolstoy. Mavor was the chief agent in promoting the emigration of the Doukhobors to Canada. In addition to several published works, he wrote a number of government reports on immigration, the wheat producing capacity of western Canada, and workmen's compensation.
