Fonds consists of a typed manuscript for the two volume book "The Inside Passage to Alaska 1792-1920" and contains about 10% more data than the published books. The books are based on the journals of Captain George Vancouver and other early explorers and from W.W. Woollen's own journals of his travels in the region from 1911 to 1919. They describe Vancouver's explorations and the appearance of the same area during the First World War , with detailed descriptions of the cities, the natural history of the region and notes on the native population and culture, especially that of the Tshimshian and the Thingit. The description of the Canadian portion of the North Pacific Coast is perhaps the most valuable for researchers as it appears to contain a larger proportion of Woollen's own impressions and less from the journals of Captain Vancouver or other authors.

The fonds also contains photographs of William Woolen at Muir Glacier, Alaska.

Woollen, William Watson, 1838-1921 : William Woollen, lawyer and naturalist, attended Butler College and was admitted to the bar in 1861. During sixty years of legal practice in his native city of Indianapolis, he acheived a notable reputation in law, publishing a number of legal works including "Woollen's Trial Procedure", "Woollen's Special Procedure" and "Woollen's Indiana Digest". He also organized the Indiana Audubon Society, and was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and other similar organizations.

In 1909, he donated his nature preserve of Buzzard's Roost to the city of Indiana for the protection of wild birds and for the study of nature. He published a book, "Birds of Buzzard's Roost", based on years of observation, as well as many articles. From 1911 to 1919, he made five trips to the North Pacific Coast. His posthumously published two volume book, "The Inside Passage to Alaska 1792-1920" describes the coast from Cap Mendocino to Kodiak Island.
