Item is a letter dated 20 June 1874 from Alexander Morris, Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba and of the Northwest Territories, to the Reverend John McDougall, missionary at Morleyville, directing him to prepare the Blackfoot and other Indians for the arrival of the North West Mounted Police, to reassure them about the work of the Boundary Commission, and to present them with gifts.

McDougall, John Chantler, 1842-1917 : John C. McDougall, born at Owen Sound, Canada West, was the son of George M. McDougall, a Methodist missionary. After he finished his education at Victoria College, Cobourg, 1857-1860, John McDougall went to the Northwest and engaged in missionary work. Later he was ordained in the Methodist ministry. In 1874 he was commissioned by the Canadian government to prepare the Blackfoot Indians for the coming of the North West Mounted Police and in 1876, on the death of his father, he took over the latter's work with the Saulteaux and Plains Crees leading to the signing of Treaty Number 6. During the 1885 North West Rebellion he performed similar services for the government in connection with the advance of the Alberta Field Force.

He was president of the Methodist Conference in 1893 and 1906, and on his retirement from the ministry in the latter year, he was appointed Dominion Commissioner to the Doukhobors and Dominion Indian Commissioner for British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. He was the author of several books including, George Millward McDougall, 1888, a biography of his father.
