He received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1909 and his M.A. from the University of Toronto in 1910. He taught in Toronto for several years, before completing his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1917. From 1912-1920, he taught at the University of California (Berkeley) and the University of Washington. In 1920, he returned to Toronto to teach Italian and he took an active role in community activities. In 1956, after 10 years as Head of the Department of Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, he retired and subsequently moved to California until his passing in 1979.
