Fonds consists of correspondence from the Rt. Hon. W.L. Mackenzie King to Sir John Martin-Harvey discussing tours of Canada, a national theatre, a department of fine arts, as well as contemporary political affairs, 1926-1942; three letters from Mackenzie King to Lady Martin-Harvey after Sir John's death discussing the atomic bomb, portraits of himself and of Sir John by English portrait painter Frank O. Salisbury, and personal affairs, 1945-1946.

Martin-Harvey, John, 1863-1944 : John Martin-Harvey, actor, was born in Wyvenhoe, Essex, the son of a member of the Institute of Naval Architects. However, instead of pursuing a profession in naval architecture, Martin-Harvey joined the stage. He toured for many years with Sir Henry Irving throughout North America and founded his own company in 1899. During eight cross-Canada tours, 1903-1932, his company appeared in every major Canadian city, as well as in many smaller centres. While travelling in Canada, Martin-Harvey lectured occasionally at the Empire and Canadian Clubs on topics of theatrical interest. In England, he managed various theatres, among them the Lyceum, the Prince of Wales, and Covent Garden Opera House, and was one of the early supporters of a national theatre in Great Britain. Martin-Harvey was the subject of a biography, "Parts I Have Played" (1909) and also wrote an autobiography "The Book of Martin Harvey". He was knighted in 1921 and retired in 1939.
