Smith, William, 1859-1932 : William Smith, archivist and historian, was educated at the University of Toronto and served with the Post Office Department from 1876 to 1913. In 1902, while assisting in the reorganization of the Newfoundland Post Office, he made the acquaintance of Guglielmo Marconi. He joined the staff of the Public Archives of Canada as secretary of the Board of Publications in 1913 and rose to the rank of Assistant Dominion Archivist. He was the author of a number of works dealing with postal and political history in Canada.
