Item is a parchment commission, under the Sign Manual of William Carr Viscount Beresford, master general of the Ordnance, to Lieutenant James Sarjeant as barrack master, dated 21 April 1828. Countersigned and entered in the Office of the Ordnance, 22 April 1828, by Henry Hardinge, clerk of the ordnance. Bears tax stamp on reverse.

Sargeant, James, 1791-ca. 1838 : James Sarjeant was born at Quebec in 1791. He entered the British Army in 1808 and served as an ensign and later lieutenant with the 34th Regiment of Foot in the East Indies and in Spain and Portugal. In 1815 he was placed on half-pay. He returned to active service in December 1823 with the 87th Regiment of Foot in the East Indies. In 1826, he sold his commission. He obtained a commission as a barrack master with the Ordnance Department in 1828. He served as barrack master at Bytown from 1828 to 1833, where he was responsible for issuing food and forage provisions and for the upkeep of the barracks. He died at Bytown, circa 1838.
