Fonds consists of a nominal roll of the 1st Canadian Divisional Engineers, 1914; a letter, from Johnson to his wife outlining his experiences in the Battle of Ypres 1915; and Officer's Record of Service booklet and a blank post card of Valenciennes.

Johnson, William, 1888-1977 : William Johnson, military officer and surveyor, was born in Long Bennington, England in 1888 and immigrated to Canada in 1910. He first worked as a surveyor and then formed his own construction company in Toronto in 1913. In 1914, he joined the Canadian Engineers 2nd Field Company, and saw action in France. He was wounded in 1915 and 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1916 and Bar in 1917. After his discharge in 1919, he returned to engineering.
