Smith, Sir William Sidney, 1764-1840 : Naval officer

Sir William Sidney Smith (1764-1840), admiral entered the navy in 1777 and saw action in North America and many parts of Europe. During his service in the Levant, he won fame for his part in the defence of Saint Jean d'Acre in 1799. He was awarded the insigna of K.C.B. by the Duke of Wellington in Paris in 1815 and achieved the rank of admiral in 1821.
