Chignecto Marine Transport Railway Company : The Chignecto Marine Transport Railway was a partially completed ship's railway covering the seventeen mile span across the Isthmus of Chignecto. The rail line consisted of two tracks, seven feet apart, onto which a ship was to be lifted by twenty hydraulic pumps. The ship would then be pulled by two locomotives from the La Planche River in the Cumberland Basin of the Bay of Fundy to a point of land in the Baie Verte in the Gulf of St. Lawrence near Tidnish. It was estimated that the entire procedure would take two hours and save the heavy shipping traffic five hundred miles of "fog and other dangers".

The Chignecto Marine Transport Railway Company was incorporated in 1882 by a Canadian Act of Parliament. Under the act the company was given a charter and promised an annual subsidy for twenty-five years pending completion of the railway by 1 July 1889. The chief engineer, and one of five interim directors, solicited British Investors who were encouraged by the Canadian Parliament's endorsement of the venture. Construction was not begun until 1888 and the act was amended to extend the completion date to 1 July 1892. When the contractor and underwriters met with financial difficulties in 1891, construction stopped.

The company obtained on Order in Council which allowed a further extension of the charter if, by 1894, both capital and a reliable contractor could be secured. The charter was never renewed, however, and was officially revoked in 1899. The Canadian Government seized the property in 1902 and the proceeds were given to the National Safe Deposit Company to invest until the anticipated compensation from the Canadian Government was arranged. As no compensation was forthcoming, the monies were distributed in 1908. The company's attorney, A.D. Provand, continued to press for compensation until approximately 1915 around which time the company appears to be defunct.
