Gambier, James, 1723-1789 : Naval officer

James Gambier (1723-1789) was made admiral in the British Navy in 1743 and placed in command of HM sloop Speedwell in 1746, where he was employed in the North Sea. In 1758 he assisted in the reduction of Louisbourg and served in various capacities at Portsmouth and New York. He became vice-admiral in 1780 and was commander-in-chief at Jamaica. James Gambier was the nephew of Baron James Gambier (1756-1833), Governor of Newfoundland, 1802-1803.
