Fonds consists of correspondence from Major Bassett's term as a Staff Officer and Aide de Camp to Sir Sam Hughes, primarily concerning requests for placements, commissions or transfers, claims for compensation, solicitations from suppliers of military goods, and related matters. Others topics include, the Ross Rifle, Government printing contracts for the Montreal Gazette, and Sir Sam Hughes's political career. There is also extensive business correspondence, relating to the Gazette and the Gazette Printing Company. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by correspondent, as received (volumes 1-7).

Bassett, John, 1886-1958 : John Bassett, military officer, journalist and publisher, was born in Omagh, Ireland and educated at the Royal University of Ireland, Bishop's University, U.N.B. and McGill and acted as parliamentary correspondent for the Montreal Gazette, 1911-1926. He was president of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, 1925-1926. During World War I, he served in the Canadian Army, and from 1914 to 1916 was a Staff Officer and Aide-de-Camp to Sir Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia and Defence. He was discharged with the rank of Major. He was director of Gazette Publishing Co. 1913-1920, vice-president, 1920-1937, president, 1937-1956, and chairman, 1956.
