Fonds consists of a diary kept by Claude C. Craig, signaller with the 28th (Northwest) Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (C.E.F.), 1918-1919; typescript reminiscences based on the 1918-1919 diary and other diaries no longer existent, 1917-1919; letters from Craig to family members describing aspects of his training with the signal corps of the 37th Battalion, C.E.F. at Niagara, Ont., 1915, his experiences in England, 1915-1916 and his service with the 28th Battalion in France, 1917-1918, and newspaper obituaries for Claude C. Craig, 1928, Rufus J. Craig, n.d., and Charles B. Patten, 1929.

Craig, Claude C., 1896-1928 : Claude C. Craig, soldier, born in 1896 at Ottawa, Ont., moved to Sudbury, Ont., with his parents at an early age. He obtained employment with the Canadian Pacific Railway as a telegraph operator in December, 1913 and in December, 1914, he joined the 97th Regiment Algonquin Rifles. Craig was taken on strength of the 37th Battalion in February, 1915 and attached to the signal section. After training at various points in Ontario, the 37th Battalion left Toronto for overseas service in November, and arrived in England on 3 December, 1915.

Following a period of training at the School of Signalling at Shorncliffe, Craig was posted to various reserve battalions and base units as a signals instructor. On 6 February, 1917, he proceeded to France with a draft of signallers for the 28th Battalion from February, 1917, until he was discharged in May, 1919. On his return to Canada, he rejoined the Canadian Pacific Railway, and served as a telegraph operator and station agent at various points in the Sudbury and Temiskaming Divisions. He died at Ottawa in 1928.
