Fonds consists of correspondence, articles, notes, reports and memoranda, 1947, 1959-1971, which provide information on many facets of the Science Council of Canada Special Study No. 8, Scientific and Technical Information in Canada, the initial correspondence, resource material and part 1 of the published report, and Tyas' notes and proposals regarding information projects for the Canadian International Development Agency and the Dominionn Bureau of Statistics.

Fonds also includes sound recordings, 1966-1967, of proceedings of selected meetings of an information science study group and related sub-groups under the chairmanship of J.P.I. Tyas.

Tyas, James Philip Ian, 1923-1973 : James Philip Ian Tyas, public servant, was born at Huntersfield, England in 1923. He was educated at the University of Manchester, where he earned a B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc., and he was named Research Fellow of the Physics Department at the University of British Columbia, in 1951.

Tyas entered the Canadian public service in 1954 when he became a Science Officer with the Defence Research Board. He remained in that position until 1965 when he became a Science Advisor with the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce. He chaired the Science Secretariat Study Group on Science and Technical Information in Canada, advised the Canadian International Development Agency on assessing its requirements for information services and the proposed International Development Research Centre, advised the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on the need for a study on information and data flow, and participated in other information related projects.

Tyas left the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce in 1971 and returned to England, where he died in 1973.
