Fonds consists of reminiscences by Arthur James Foster of his service with the 159th Battalion C.E.F., in Canada, and the 38th Battalion C.E.F., in France. Foster recounts his personal experiences at the Battles of Passchendaele, Arras, and Cambrai. Photocopy, 47 pages.

Foster, Arthur James, 1898-1981 : Arthur James Foster, soldier, was born in 1898 at Otonabee Township, Ont., and enlisted in the 159th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1916. After training in England he was sent as part of a draft to the 38th Battalion in France. He served as a stretcher bearer with the battalion through some of the heaviest fighting of the war at the battles of Passchendaele, Arras, and Cambrai. He was awarded the Military Medal for his action at Arras, and was wounded at the battle of Cambrai in October, 1918.

Foster was discharged from the army after a period of convalescence in England. He returned to Canada, and in 1920, married Nellie Greer, a school teacher. After the war, he worked for the Kerns Telephone Company in northern Ontario, until 1926, when he moved to Toronto and began work with the Bell Telephone Company. He remained with the Bell Telephone Company until his retirement in February 1967. He died on 29 April 1981.
