Fonds consists of records which document the life and career of James Cooper Mason with particular emphasis on his years spent serving in the South African War. As such, the fonds also contains Mason's diary from 1900 which he kept while convalescing in Capetown. The fonds also contains the correspondence of Miss Jean Florence MacArthur which recounts her family life and the impact of the South African War on her friends and herself in addition to Mason's own correspondence with his family and friends, 172 pages; photocopies, 41 pages.

The fonds also contains photographs of operations, equipment, and personnel of the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, during the South African War, 1899-1900; and of St. Vincent, Madeira, 1900.

Mason, James Cooper, 1875-1923 : James Cooper Mason, born in 1875 at Toronto, Ont., the eldest son of Brigadier-General the Honourable James Mason and Elizabeth Cooper, received his education in Toronto city schools and at the Toronto Collegiate Institute. He enlisted in the Queen's Own Rifles in February, 1891 and served three years in the ranks before joining the 10th Battalion, Royal Grenadiers in 1894 as second lieutenant. He was promoted lieutenant in 1895, captain in 1899, major in 1910 and lieutenant-colonel in 1915.

Captain Mason volunteered for duty in the South African War and served as lieutenant in "B" Company, 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Paardeberg, 18 February 1900. After a period of convalescence at Capetown, he rejoined his battalion at Springs in June 1900 and took part in subsequent operations. Lieutenant Mason was twice mentioned in despatches from the front and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his service in South African. In 1904 he married Jean Florence, eldest daughter of Alexander MacArthur of Toronto.

James Cooper Mason had joined his father's firm, the Home Savings and Loan Company, in 1892 as a junior clerk. The company was incorporated into the Home Bank of Canada in 1903 and Mason had was appointed manager of the Toronto branch in 1906. He was promoted assistant general manager in 1908, acting general manager in 1917 and succeeded his father as general manager in 1918. He died at Toronto, 6 August 1923.
