Fonds consists of accounts of military life, the Boer War and South Africa, including an unpublished manuscript entitled "Comrades All" which is in chronological order, with detailed table of contents, diary entries, newspaper clippings, and poetry. The main topics are the advance through Orange Free State, relief of Wepner, Pretoria, Belfast, Lillefontein, Harts River, and the Western Transvaals, and the trip to and from South Africa. Manuscript appears to be a reinterpretation of the original diary, and reminiscences in many places.

Hilder, Albert E., b. 1877 : Soldier

Albert E. Hilder served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons and the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles in the South African War. He stresses that the manuscript features "the lighter side of army life".
