Powley, Albert Edgar, 1901-1980 : Albert Edgar Powley, public servant and broadcaster, known as Bert Powley, was born in 1901 in England. He immigrated to Canada in 1924, after having spent several years in New Zealand and Australia. From 1925 to 1940, he was a newspaperman with the Toronto Star, the Mail and Empire, and the Toronto Telegram respectively. Powley joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) 1940 as senior editor of the central newsroom in Toronto. In 1943, he was sent to London, England in charge of the overseas war correspondents. Powley was one of the founders of the CBC news service.

After the war, Powley returned to Toronto, where he was made News Feature Editor, then National Supervisor of Special Events, and finally Special Programs Officer for special and feature historical programs. Powley retired from CBC in 1968, but was retained as a consultant until 1974.
