Brown, Arthur Roy, 1893-1944 : Arthur Roy Brown, born in 1893 at Carleton Place, enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service, and was commissioned as a flight sub-lieutenant in 1915. He served with the No. 9, 3 and 11 Squadrons, ending the war as a captain, having earned two Distinguished Service Crosses, and having achieved thirteen victories. He is credited with shooting down the "Red Baron", Captain Manfred von Richthoven, on 21 April 1918.

After the war, he engaged in business, was the director of several companies, and formed an airtransport company to serve mining regions in northern Ontario and Quebec.
