Fonds consists of UNICEF files, n.d., 1953-1984; Vanier Institute of the Family, correspondence and memoranda, minutes of meetings, annual reports, research papers, n.d., 1962-1974; International Social Service, papers of the international executive and I.S.S. Committee in Canada, n.d., 1957-1982; New Horizons programs, correspondence and memoranda concerning senior citizens' organizations, and the program, n.d., 1972-1977; subject files, 1947-1979; personal files of correspondence and an autobiographical sketch, n.d., 1957-1981. Additional personal papers of Stewart Sutton relating to his involvement with the Vanier Institute of the Family, UNICEF, International Social Service as well as personal, correspondence and subject files are also included in the fonds.

The fonds also contains photographs documenting Stewart Sutton's childhood in Coaticooke, Quebec; his activities with the Children's Aid Society in Toronto; children's summer camps during the 1930s and 1940s; and his activities with UNICEF in Palestine, Africa, Korea, and Japan in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Sutton, Stewart, 1909-1988 : Stewart Sutton was born in Coaticook, Que. and educated at the University of Toronto. From 1929 to 1931, he acted as YMCA secretary in Regina and as secretary of the Saskatchewan Boys' Work Board. In 1933, Sutton went to Chicago to work as a settlement house resident at Hull House under the supervision of Jane Addams. Returning to Toronto, he worked as a social worker in the Protestant Children's Homes of Toronto and as assistant director of the York County Children's Aid Society, 1935-1940, before moving on to become director of the Children's Aid Society of Kingston and Frontenac County, 1940-1942.

From 1942 to 1946 Sutton served as director of the newly formed Canadian Army's Directorate of Social Science, designed to help servicemen deal with family problems. From 1946 to 1955, Sutton was executive director of the Children's Aid Society of Toronto. He also helped to establish and become the first president of Canadian Music Associates. In 1955, he began nine years of work with UNICEF. He spent one year in Brazzaville as an assistant representative after which he was appointed regional director for the Middle East. Six years later he established and was appointed director of the regional UNICEF office for Africa, south of the Sahara.

In 1963, he took a position as International Director, International Social Service, Geneva. Sutton returned to Canada to become the first secretary-general of the Vanier Institute of the Family, 1966-1971. In 1972 he began work as a consultant with the Department of National Health and Welfare's New Horizons Program for elderly Canadians. In 1979, Sutton became interim director of International Social Service Canada while that organization worked to obtain independent status as a national branch of the International Social Service. He later became first executive director of the new Canadian branch of the I.S.S.
