Fonds consists of the flying logbook, 1942-1944, of Pilot Officer Mervyn L.G. Lovering R.C.A.F., documenting his progress from bombing and gunnery school, through operational training and heavy conversion units, to service as a mid upper gunner on No. 50 Squadron R.A.F. Lancaster III bombers.

Lovering, Mervyn Lloyd George, 1917-1944 : Mervyn Lloyd George Lovering, military officer, was born in 1917 at Matchedash Township, Ont., and received his primary and secondary education in Coldwater, Ont. From 1933 to 1937, he was self employed as a farmer and truck driver. In 1937, he joined Ontario Hydro and worked as a lineman until his enlistment in the Royal Canadian Air Force on 16 December, 1941 at Hamilton, Ont. He qualified as an air gunner at No. 9 Bob and Gunnery School, Mont-Joli, Que. and was commissioned pilot officer on 6 December 1942.

Pilot Officer Lovering served as a gunnery instructor at No. 2 Bombing and Gunnery School, Mossbank, Saskatchewan 1 December, 1943 and reported to No. 16 Operational Training Unit, Barford, St. John, England on 14 December 1943. During May - June 1944, Pilot Officer Lovering was posted to a heavy conversion unit at Wigsley, Newark, Nottinghamshire, and then to No. 9 Lancaster Finishing School at Syerston, England.

He reported to No. 50 Squadron Royal Air Force at Skellingthorpe, England on 11 June 1944, and served as a mid upper gunner on Lancaster III bombers. On 28 July 1944, Pilot Officer Lovering was reported missing, later presumed dead, on his fifteenth operational mission over occupied Europe.
