Smith, Mrs. Tom : In 1947, Barbara Ann Scott of Ottawa (b. 1928) became the first Canadian to win the women's world figure skating championship. A year later, she repeated this achievement and added the European and Olympic championships to her list of skating honours. Then began the rapid transformation of a skating champion into a social phenomenon. As "a symbol of glamour and success" Miss Scott came to epitomize young Canadian womanhood.

In 1948, she turned to professional skating and starred with major American skating revues like Holiday on Ice and Hollywood Ice Revue. She married Tom King, an American businessman, in 1955 and settled in the United States.
