Fonds consists of the papers of the Estate of John Bell; family correspondence; Queen's College, Kingston, Faculty of Medicine lecture notebooks; case books related to Bell's Montreal General Hospital and private practises; personal diary; various cash-ledger-account books; and newspaper clippings (volumes 1-3).

Bell, John, 1845-1878 : John Bell, physician and naturalist, was born in 1845 in Toronto, the son of Rev. Andrew Bell and the former Elizabeth Notman. He attended Queen's College, Kingston, and received from that institution his BA, MA and MD degrees in 1862, 1865 and 1866 respectively. Bell also received his MD diploma from McGill University, Montreal, in 1866 at the age of 21, after serving in US Army Hospitals during the American Civil War. He began his Canadian medical practise at the Montreal General Hospital, serving in the position of Assistant Surgeon (Apothecary) for three years. In 1868 he entered private practise in Montreal. He was physician to the Montreal Workingmen's Mutual Benefit & Widows' and Orphans' Provident Society, attending physician to the Protestant Infants Home, a surgeon to the Montreal Garrison Artillery, and a physician to the St. Andrew's Society.

Bell also made significant contributions to scientific journals and had a great interest in botany. His sudden death of pneumonia, at the age of 32, after contracting a cold while enroute to his uncle's funeral in March 1878 in Hamilton, Ontario, was widely mourned. He was unmarried.
