Fonds consists of personal papers, 1939-1976; World Jewish Congress material concerning Becker's activities as Canadian representative 1959-1976; Canadian Jewish Congress material, 1953-1975; material relating to the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and Reconstructionist Synagogue of Montreal, 1960-1975; Vanier Institute of the Family, and Centennial Interfaith activity, 1963-1971; miscellaneous Jewish community activities, 1941-1975; newspaper clippings and scrapbooks relating to National Bicentennary of Canadian Jewry and Becker's career, n.d., 1859-1960.

The fonds also contains photographs from international and Canadian Jewish conferences, [ca. 1930-1973]; and sound recordings of talks by, and interviews with, Lavy M. Becker, 1958-1974.

Becker, Lavy M., 1905-2001 : Lavy M. Becker was born in Montreal and received his B.A. from McGill University in 1926. He then studied for the rabbinate in New York at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. After receiving his Master of Hebrew Letters in 1930 he completed his M.A. from Columbia University in 1935. After a short rabbinical career he served as executive director of the YMHA in Montreal, director of the U.S.O. Jewish Welfare Board programme for servicemen in New England, and director of the Joint Distribution Committee in the American Zone in occupied Germany, 1945-1947 where he was in charge of relief efforts for Jewish survivors of the Holocaust.

In 1947 he returned to Montreal where he became a partner with his brothers in Rubenstein Brothers Co. Inc., a supplier of machinery to the needle trades. He retired from business in 1969 to devote himself to community service. Becker was one of the founders of congregation Dorshei Emet, the Reconstructionist Synagogue of Montreal and served as its unpaid spiritual leaders from its establishment in 1960 until a full-time rabbi was hired in 1977. He was founder of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College of Philadelphia in 1968.

Rabbi Becker served on the executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress and the World Jewish Congress. In his capacity as chairman of the Small Jewish Communittee of the W.J.C. he travelled extensively to South America and the Caribbean. He was chairman of the Centennial Interfaith Conference and served as a director of the Vanier Institute of the Family. He was president of the Jewish Community Federation of Montreal in the 1960s. The Federation later established the Lavy M. Becker Chair at Recontructionist Rabbinical College.
