Fonds consists of correspondence, minutes, legal papers, memorabilia, print matter, and other material concerning the Seafarers International Union of Canada (SIU) and Donald Swait's membership and career in that union, including such topics as elections, conventions, submissions to government, internal investigations of SIU representatives, executive board meetings, litigation, and SIU officers Hal Banks and Leonard J. McLaughlin, n.d., 1949-1982; general subject files containing correspondence, notes, print matter, and other material relating to the Association of Lake Carriers, other maritime transportation unions, the Board of Trustees of the Maritime Transportation Unions, Upper Lakes Shipping Company, and other topics, 1947-1971; and a membership book and other memorabilia of Swait's membership in the Canadian Seamen's Union, 1947-1949.

Fonds contains photographs pertaining to the SIU (1951-ca. 1967).

Fonds also contains amateur film footage taken by Swait of SIU activities.

Swait, Donald, b. 1928 : Donald Swait, sailor and trade unionist, was born in Toronto in 1928. He attended Bloor Collegiate before becoming a merchant seaman in 1946. He was a member of the Canadian Seamen's Union from 1947 until 1949, when he joined the Seafarers International Union (SIU). In 1953, he joined the SIU staff and served in a number of positions including despatcher and executive board member, before becoming Secretary-Treasurer in 1961. In 1972, Swait left the SIU to become the Director of Organizing for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and later served as a representative of the Canadian Conference of Teamsters in Toronto.
