Fonds consists of papers relating to J.W. Melson's involvement in the Alaska-British Columbia boundary survey, 1904-1910.

Folder 1 includes a transcript (8 pages long) of Melson's recollections of incidents in 1904 and 1910 made in 1980 and a photograph album index listing the sizes and subjects of 188 pictures taken by Melson while surveying near Sumdum in 1909.

Folder 2 includes a letter to Melson's parents describing a flooded survey camp and the destruction of a canoe going down river, dated 1907.

Folder 3 contains copies of three photographs each with handwritten notations, one of snowcovered mountains labelled "Surveying the Alaska Boundary, 1904", another of a man in front of a transit is also inscribed "Surveying the Alaska Boundary, 1904" and a third of two men identified as "Joe Shepherd" and "J.W. Melson" at the "Cairn at Summit of Mt. Melson".

Melson, John Waller, (1887-1985) : John Waller Melson, born in Manitoba, was a surveyor and later professor of Civil Engineering, Survey and Geodesy, at the University of Toronto While still an undergraduate at the University of Toronto, he became involved in the survey of the Alaska-British Columbia Boundary, 1904-1910.

Additional information relating to his lectures at the University of Toronto (1940-1960) can be found within the Llewellyn E. Jones fonds (1910-1999) at the University of Toronto Archives.
