Fonds consists of a scrapbook of material relating to the Ottawa Field Battery, the County of Carleton Exhibition Association, the Lady Stanley Institute for Trained Nurses, and the County of Carleton Protestant General Hospital; and material on the history of Ottawa, particularly its newspapers. The latter includes a series of letters, 1900-1901, from Dr. Philip Palmer Burrows of Lindsay, Ontario, providing information about his father, John Burrows (1789-1848), who was Clerk of Works for the Rideau Canal, together with family papers given to Woodburn by Dr. Burrows.

Woodburn, Alexander Smith, 1830-1904 : Alexander Smith Woodburn was born in Northern Ireland. His family immigrated to Canada when Woodburn was about ten years old and settled in Gloucester. Woodburn learned the printer's trade under Dawson Kerr, publisher of The Orange Lily, in Bytown. With John George Bell, he later established the printing firm of Woodburn and Bell on Elgin Street. In 1885 he founded The Ottawa Evening Journal, of which he sold a half share to P.D. Ross in 1886. In 1891, when his printing business was failing, he sold Ross the rest of his interest in the newspaper and soon after joined its staff. He remained connected with The Journal until his death in 1904.

Woodburn was one of the founders of the Ottawa Field Battery, served as secretary-treasurer of the County of Carleton Exhibition Association and helped to promote the large exhibitions which were forerunners of the Canada Central Fair. In 1871 he represented Wellington Ward on city council. Among his philanthropic concerns were the organization of the Sons of Temperance lodge in Ottawa, the founding of the Irish Protestant Benevolent Society, and the founding of the Protestant Home for the Aged. He also served on the board of directors of the County of Carleton Protestant General Hospital.

The unit was apparently received in 1905 from Thomas [Coltrin] Keefer of Ottawa, Ont. Transferred in 1986 from MG 24, I 106; formerly volume 1 of the now disbanded Keefer Collection.
