Included are advertising photos for transport companies and trucks; photos of Toronto, Ont. and vicinity; photos of Muskoka Lakes, 1910-1913; family photographs and group photos, [ca.1885-1983].
The fond also contains personal material relating to John Micklethwaite and his family, as well as some records relating to the family's photography studio in Toronto including correspondence, 1905-1984, a photography notebook, ca. 1930's, personal and war records, 1930's to 1980's, of John Micklethwaite, correspondence, 1903, membership certificates, 1920's to 1940's and business and personal records, 1910-1920's of Fred Micklethwaite and genealogical information relating to the Micklethwaite, Dewar and McKechnie families.
Also included are films about John T. Hepburn Iron Company, [ca. 1950-1959], and newsreels from the German series Degeto-Weltspiegel, 1941-1950.
Included in horizontal storage: certificates and degrees related to the Freemasons; a family tree including the Dewar, McKchnie, and Micklewaite families. All items are in container 2.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Micklethwaite, John Harold, 1916-1985 : John Harold Micklethwaite, born 1916-09-07, came from a family of photographers. During the 1850s his great grandfather William Barton Micklethwaite practiced photography in Ireland. His grandfather Frank William Micklethwaite immigrated to Canada in the 1870s and established a career in photography in Toronto. His three sons Frank, Fred and Percy each worked for a time in the family studio. When John Harold Micklethwaite's father, Fred, died in 1941, John carried on the family business. Although his family's specialization had been in portrait photography, John's specialty was commercial photography. His career was interrupted during W.W. II while he served in the R.C.A.F. Upon return from military service in 1945, he founded studio concentrating on commercial, advertising, and industrial photography.
Works located in: National Archives of Canada: 1982-144.Additional information:General note:The following items have been placed in horizontal storage: a family tree of the Dewar, McKechnie and Micklethwaite families, Honorary Life Membership in the Ontario Society of Photographers (1940) and a certificate of admittance to the Free Masons of Canada (1926) of Fred Micklethwaite, and a Degree of a Past Grand to P.C. Hodson from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (1923).
