Fonds consists of fifty-nine letters written by George Nicholson on the voyage to Canada and while in Canada, 1904-1906, to his wife Agnes in England. The letters document his journey from England, to Quebec, to Edmonton and his later travels, the nature of Canadian cities and frontier life, and his constant search for employment.

Nicholson, George, 1860-1906 : George Nicholson was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, the son of George and Hannah Nicholson. In 1889, he married Agnes Emily Pederson, and together they had six children.

A carpenter by profession, George Nicholson immigrated to Canada in 1904, in search of work. Although he went as far west as Edmonton, and subsequently travelled extensively in Alberta and Saskatchewan, he never found permanent work. For health reasons, he returned to England in July 1906, and died in December that same year.
