Fonds consists of photographs, 1900-1955, depicting trips across Canada by Eva Smithers, daughter of A.W. Smithers, president of Grand Trunk Railway, with photographs by E. Smithers; postcards and photos of B.C, especially Smithers and Prince Rupert, B.C., with photographs by C.M. Tait; Rome, Italy.

Fonds also contains textual records, 1854-1929, 1971, in the form of family papers concerning Smither's tours of Canada as chairman of the GTR, an article entitled "The Grand Trunk Railway" and correspondence concerning points on the GTR named after members of the Smithers family; reports, maps, timetables and clippings from the Grand Trunk Railway; and miscellaneous reports, timetables, clippings, pamphlets and publications.

Fonds also contains cartographic materials, n.d., 1880, 1901-1926, consisting of the Atlas of Canada, Department of the Interior, 1906; and the following maps: Grand Trunk Railway system, showing the tour of inspection of A. W. Smithers, Alfred Waldron, Sir, 1850-1924 : Alfred W. Smithers, Chairman Grand Trunk Railway Company, was born in England and joined the London Stock Exchange in 1873 as a partner in the firm Ackroyd and Smithers. He became a director of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1896 and was chairman of the Board of Directors from 1909 until the dissolution of the railway in 1921. He spent most of his life in England, making periodic visits to Canada while chairman. He was involved with railway management in England, was chairman of the English Association of American Bond and Shareholders, and served as as MP in the British House of Commons from 1918-1922. He was knighted in 1919. The town of Smithers, British Columbia, is named in his honour.
