Joseph William Jeffery was born in California of Canadian parents, and then moved with his parents to London, Ont. He learned the printing trade in London and served with the 2nd Special Service Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment in the South African War from 30 October 1899 to 5 November 1900.
Following the war he worked with the Montreal Gazette and the Regina Leader-Post before being appointed King's Printer for the Province of Alberta. In 1927 Jeffery returned to London and joined the London Life Insurance Company. He served as superintendent of the company's printing department for nearly twenty years, retiring in December, 1945.
