Biography/Administrative history:

LeMoine, James MacPherson, 1825-1912 : James MacPherson LeMoine was born in Quebec City. He was adopted by his grandfather, Daniel MacPherson, seigneur of Crane Island, when his father's exporting firm suffered irreversible losses. Educated at the Séminaire de Québec, 1838-1845, he became a barrister in 1850. He practised law in Quebec and served as inspector of inland revenue for the District of Quebec, 1869-1899. He was the first president of the Royal Society of Canada, five times president of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec and a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Militia. J.M. LeMoine was the bearer of numerous diplomas from American historical societies and the author of many books and monographs on Quebec and the lower St. Lawrence.
